15 reasons to choose Digital Marketing as a Career Option

Have you ever wondered why some people are so successful with the most basic ideas and education while some others struggle on a daily basis to meet their daily errands despite being technically strong and having a solid degree in their hands?

Right time, right thing and the right place. It clicks and creates wonders. When supply meets the requirements, it creates success, if maintained it can even create monopolies, and you can rule the market.

One such right choice to make now if you are a fresher/job seeker is choosing Digital Marketing as your career. With the world being technologically connected where the territorial boundaries are being dwindled, e-commerce is seeing one of its golden eras.

Going by the meaning of the word, we get a fair bit of understanding that Digital Marketing has got something to do with the promotion of brands online. Now let us have a quick look at ways it is currently being done:

Content Marketing – a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in products or services.

-Online retail sites

Sale of products through a virtual retail outlet, typically an e-commerce store.

-Mobile marketing

-Social media marketing

Marketing through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc.

-E-mail marketing

-Search engine optimization

The ad will appear as a search result in itself a solution provided by the browser to the related search of the customer.

-Web design

Designing websites that offer a one-stop shop for promoting all the products and services online.

A fertile land gives a better crop with the same seeds. A booming field will give you better perks with the same efforts. Considering time and human intellect as a resource, Digital Marketing is one of the best career investments you can make right now. Here are the reasons why:

1.Demand

Of the top 10 companies with the highest current net worth, the operating activities of 6 amongst them (Amazon, Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, etc.) are based on digital media. The current demand for the digital jobs predicted by 2020 is 20 million where the supply is nowhere near.

2.Demand-supply gap

A simple economic principle states, the higher the demand a scarcer the commodity, and higher is the price. Once qualified you would become one amongst the very few professionals who would have chosen this field. The companies have a very limited say to have an alternative choice. So, the placement is rest assured.

3.Growth rate

As mentioned earlier, top performing companies are highly dependent on digital media professionals, like social marketing analysts to analyze the patterns and provide them with their observations, to alter the operational strategy. With the total world’s population being 7.6 billion and at least 2 billion being virtually connected through online media, the need for digital marketing is definitely on an increasing trend at an exponential pace.

4.Demographics of the Indian economy

Talking about a career in India more specifically, India is one of the youngest countries with a majority of its population in their teens and twenties. Considering this fact, the demand for the consumable goods and online services is very high on the contrary to traditional investment portfolios like real estate. So, many global companies are tapping this potential of the Indian market and investing here. Hence, you can enjoy the privilege of working in the best of the best companies that come down to your own backyard.

5.Competitive pay scale

When there is too much competition, the companies fight to get the best resources and are generally short of resources, leaving them no choice as there are competitors willing to hire you at a better price. You can be paid very well and at a highly competitive rate.

6.Scope of creativity

Unlike traditional career options like banking and engineering, there is a high need of your creative juices on a day in and day out basis. There would be your definitive fingerprint out there on everything you do, and your service is so unique and irreplaceable as it is designed entirely by you.

7.Work etiquette and environment

Many employers are placing a lot of emphasis on how well the product is delivered rather than on how it is delivered. Meaning, as long as you are meeting their expectations here, no one would really bother on how many hours you are spending time visibly doing the task in office.

8.The necessity of a formal degree

There is a pre-conceived notion that people from reputed colleges alone are competent enough. This mental block is imprinted in the minds of an employer when it comes to traditional banking and engineering jobs. In the space of Digital Marketing, it is your personal potential and creativity alone that matters. A formal degree is not the driving force for your betterment in your career here.

9.Cost or an investment in the firm?

An engineer in a finance company only assists and do not drive the productivity. Similarly, a finance professional in a manufacturing industry only supports and do not drive the productivity. They are ancillary and do not directly contribute to the revenue of the firm. To juxtapose, a digital marketing career is always on the productivity driving side as you are the one who would advise the company, on how to make their further moves and communicate their existing profile to the general public (through blogs, etc.)

Companies naturally want to reward you as they want to keep you motivated to fuel their growth prospects high.

10.Addition to your income and profile

Already a professional wanting to try your hand in your passion? Want to add a new source of income? Your right choice is digital media marketing. Right from offering flexible working hours to the lack of need to mandatorily do a formal degree, it is a right choice for your quest.

11.Interaction with the dynamics of the world – experience counted!

When you are in the marketing field, it requires you to keep abreast of a lot of market changes like – new companies incorporated, booms and lows during a life cycle of a company and an industry, etc. Unlike a traditional process-oriented job where your experience comes to no value when you change the company, this expertise you gain here can be carried along, and it goes and grows with you. So, your experience in Digital Marketing not only gets accumulated in years but in quality of output.

12.Influence of working conditions

In a corporate scenario with the amount of human interaction on a given day, you might get influenced with the people around you, and your productivity gets influenced by them at least subconsciously. This career assures you that you can dictate terms of your working.

13.Entrepreneurship and independence

A complete business as a career option is a risk, and full employment as an option lacks independence. If you want independence and avoid risk, you can choose ways and means of various types of digital marketing and prove yourself.

14.Automation and robotics

With the advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence, robots can mimic a lot of processes humans could do and even much better than them. Fortunately, Digital Marketing falls under one of those few fields which involve dynamic thinking and human common sense. Good news- there is no pressure that you would be replaced by a robot.

15.Mobility:

Digital media marketing provides you greater scope for versatility and you choose your place of stay and even the country you live in. You have a greater chance to travel abroad and visit many places than any other career option with the mere fact that majority of these companies that you intend to work for our global and you can also partly work in multiple companies at a time.

Current scenario

In the Recent Article by Indian Express”

The number of internet users across the globe is 3,567,365, 887 and counting. Even in India, fueled by internet penetration in rural areas, the number of internet users is set to see a two-fold rise standing at 730 million by 2020 against the 350 million at the end of 2015. These are just a few numbers that indicate the influence that the internet and allied forces bear on our lives today.

With increased internet usage over the last few years, the digital and social media landscape in India has witnessed a paradigm shift. About 87 percent of brands leverage digital, and 38% of them allocate a whopping 1/3rd of their budget to digital marketing. This only mirrors the fact that increasingly businesses are embracing digital to attract, engage and transact with their customers and this is being aided by increasing investments in better internet connectivity and growth in internet and social media usage.

The reason for this enthusiasm for digital marketing is simple: digital marketing is perhaps the only cost-effective and most viable method to get your message out and build a solid consumer base. It is not only great value for your money but also, the barrier to enter and scale up are minuscule compared to traditional media. In other words, you can have a significant impact on a limited budget which has leveled the playing field between big and small companies, thereby giving a great fighting chance to new talent to compete with the biggies, without fear of being trampled.

Tap the right choice now, be one of the very few in the lot. Join digital media marketing.

Lack of consistent orders, dropping margins and operational costs have forced HR Consultants to downsize their operations.

As a result, HR Consultants constantly look out for Work from Home Recruiters who lend their time and expertise in fulfilling positions.

Content Writer

I once worked as a content writer. I used to earn Rs. 50 per article and used the consolidated amount to buy a gift for my girlfriend (now wife!). The demand for a good piece of content has never died down. In fact, the market is moving vertically. What has come down is the pay. In today’s scenario, anyone with a computer, the internet can become a decent writer. And the amount of content generated on the web is enormous that you cannot tell the difference between a good writer and a decent writer.

Content writing is here to stay, make no mistake about that. If you are willing to settle down with a low paid and a low-risk profile, content writing during free time will suit you.

Product Photographer

Ideal for: Male Photographer

I say you would be cheap because Product Photography is not your full-time job. You would enjoy doing it during the weekend or in the evening, not throughout the day. Earning potential even during the weekends are good.

You might then decide to convert this into a full-time job, but that is your perfect choice.

Telecaller

Ideal for: Female with a good voice and excellent communication

Skill Level: Basic

Travelling: No

Earning Potential: Low to Medium

Starter Kit: A good resume, dedicated mobile number

If you would have received a call asking you to buy an insurance product, what would be immediate inference? You don’t even think about anything; you prefer to cut the call with some conversations. Sometimes you are so angry that you slam the red button on your mobile phone as though you are hitting the person on the other end.

The poor person on the other end is termed as a Tele Caller. Traditionally companies hire them to cold call customers and pitch their products. Today, especially the day of writing this blog, things have changed. We live in the age, where if you spend Rs. 350 a month on a prepaid number, you are going to receive the option of using unlimited calls and 1GB data/day.

Leveraging these cheap mobile rates, most companies have moved their call centre set-ups to home. Companies prefer hiring homemakers or female candidates who prefer to work from home and make calls on daily basis. The problem here would be the lower amount of pay-out made to those potential tele callers.

I would say even for female candidates, this is a least preferred option, even if it’s considered as an option.

So, that’s my list, and it is a long read. I would appreciate if you can share your views and comments on the article.

7 Job Hunting Methods for Freshers | Version 2017

7 Job Hunting Methods for Freshers

When I completed my Mechanical Engineering in 2007, people used to say, “If you do not get a job through on-campus placement, take a few copies of your resume and circulate them to companies in Ambattur, Chennai”. As foolish, it may sound, I did exactly that and received more than few offers, but from industries located in Gummidipoondi and Oragadam. The fact that I had worked in Sales is a different story.

Ten years later, my job hunting methods seem to be outdated. The rules of Job hunting have changed in the past decade for good and bad. Some of you might have reservations on what I am about to say, but my methods though unorthodox would still prove effective in finding the right job for you.

7 Off Campus Job Hunting Methods for Freshers

Job Portals

It is beyond doubt that Job Portals such as Naukri.com, Monster.com is dominating the job search market. The convenience of sitting on a couch and searching for jobs through the internet makes it fascinating for youngsters. The most significant benefit of using a Job Portal is that you can reach a wider group of recruiters at a click of a button. Job portals have a “freemium” business model. You can access certain features for free and premium features at a cost.

LinkedIn

Most entry level professionals fail to grasp the power of LinkedIn for Job Search. It is very rare to find a fresher without a Facebook profile, but the importance of LinkedIn is underrated. Create a profile for yourself in LinkedIn and make the most of its Job Search option. Check out these links to create a killer LinkedIn profile.

Secrets of building a LinkedIn profile that gets results

Cold Email

Sending a cold email to potential recruiters is an outdated and a less efficient method. Having said that, we must not overlook this avenue of job hunting. Some companies prefer to receive job applications through email. What you need is a good resume and a convincing covering letter that would enthral its reader. Seek our professional resume writing services to uplift your profile.

Submitting resume through Career Pages

Some companies advertise job positions through their business’s website. To apply through this mode is a time-consuming process. At the onset, you need to search in Google for potential recruiters, browse their websites, find job openings, tailor your resume and upload your CV on their career page. The process may sound confusing, but do not forget the tools required are just a computer with a good internet connection and your time. As a byproduct, you would become well versed with companies in the domains you are targeting.

Direct Submission

Sometimes the best way to submit your resume is to present a hard copy in person. I did that, and I have explained the results in the opening paragraph of this blog. Depending upon your industry, make a list of companies matching your interest and submit your resume in person. Though a laborious and a painstaking job hunting method, it would prove fruitful.

Alumni Networking

Every college is bound to have a alumni network. You would have been in touch with them unconsciously through various social media channels, and yet you are not tapping this potential job hunting method. Make friends with your seniors, and leverage their existing positions to find yourself a job opportunity.

Apprenticeship

A job for a fresher is a process of “learning” and “earning”. It is unfortunate that most entry level professionals forget the “learning” part. Their focus is purely on earnings and perks. Some companies offer an apprenticeship to professionals who wish to hone their employability skills. If you are looking to learn before earn, then try being an apprentice for a short period. Leverage the confidence you gain in your apprenticeship and scout for opportunities later.

I would conclude that the above list is not exhaustive. If you have tried and succeeded using any of the above job hunting methods or a different one, please do share with me in the comments section below.

Tamil Nadu Government decides to abolish the announcement of +2 ranks. What does it mean for students?

Tamil Nadu Government abolishes the +2 ranking systemI competed in the rat race of +2 exams in the year 2003. During that time there was another rat race termed TNPCEE which stands for Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examinations. A cut-off mark is calculated by normalising the scores you obtain in your +2 exams and TNPCEE exams.

The two ranking system before 2006

In those days, Education Department of Tamil Nadu used to announce two set of rankings
* Names & Marks of the students who have occupied first three ranks. Sometimes these positions are shared by multiple candidates. On a lighter note whenever there is a topic surrounding this issue, I remember the scene from the movie Gilli.
* Rankings based on normalisation list (The combination of +2 marks and the TNPCEE marks). Though the first three ranks are not announced, you can find your ranking in your caste quota by logging into their website. I vividly remember that I ranked 4000th position in Engineering cut off list. I didn’t even bother to check my position on the medical list.

The Government decided to scrap the TNPCEE in the year 2006, a year which I can remember because my brother belongs to the last batch of students who had appeared for TNPCEE. Students were quite anxious, and there was contradictory information regarding the proceedings of the exam. And finally, the exam was conducted.

Remember while +2 exams have a mixture of descriptive and multiple choice questions, TNPCEE was a complete MCQ exam. The fact that a student answers the exam in OCR sheets added to the anxiety levels. Many training centres milked money training students for TNPCEE. When the Government body decided to go away with the devil, it shattered the market surrounding the TNPCEE training centres.

Tamil Nadu Government abolishes the ranking system for +2 students

Eleven years later the Education Department of Tamil Nadu has decided to scrap another crown jewel of Education Business – The announcement of first three ranks in +2 exams. The implications of this decision can only be felt or measured during the next year exams, definitely not this year.

Whether the businesses belonging to education mafia, continue their existing strategies or fine tune it? We are sure to know of it in the coming days.

The students who appear for +2 exams would fall into these three categories
* Students who are exceptional learners and aim for professional courses
* Students who are not exceptional learners, but work hard and  aim for the top rankings and professional courses
* Students who are happy to cross the 55% line, and join a college

I am sure that third category will not be affected by any announcement whatsoever. They are quite happy to clear the exams and get into a college. While they might have slim chances of getting into Engineering/Medicine, they would secure a berth in other courses for sure.

The first category may or may not be affected by this announcement depending upon the potential of the student. For me, it is quite hard to understand their predicament.

Although I am not a professional psychologist who have dealt with emotions, I am confident that the second category would be the most affected. I would apply the “Carrot & the Stick” principle here. The top ranking is the carrot, and the stick is your the hard work and sacrifice.
The Government has removed the carrot and thereby would render the stick useless. Students might reduce the intensity of their workout. Before the announcement, even if the students fail to secure the coveted top position, they end up in entering into a reputed Engineering college through Single Window System. (I am not talking about Medicine here, as the introduction of NEET has complicated issues). With the announcement, students might become complacent.

I am confident in writing about the second category because I used to belong to it.

Can we buy the stress-related argument of the Government?

Honestly, yes! In spite of the fact that there might be the lack of motivation, there would also be an environment where there would be less stress, anxiety and peer pressure.

It would be fascinating to watch how things would unfold in the days to come.

For the year 2017, it would be a disappointment for some and a great relief for many. The madness surrounding the rat race would cool down a little and sanity would prevail.

And I would like to recollect a scene from the critically acclaimed movie – Appa where a father is furious that his son lost 100% by a margin of few marks.

I welcome you to share your +2 results experience in the comment section below.

12 key ingredients of a perfect resume | Version 2017

12 ingridients of a perfect resume
12 ingredients of a perfect resume

It may sound weird, but I always used to compare the process of writing perfect resume against cooking. You may wonder why? Think about it, resume writing is an art, so is cooking. You prepare food mixing the right ingredients in the right quantity, and you perfect a resume by presenting a variety of facts. Cooking is a slow process and sometimes painstaking for rookies. Rest assured writing a presentation-perfect resume requires its set of skills.

Finally, a tantalizing food is a feast for the eyes. On the same note, a well-written resume would send the right signals to the receptor areas of a recruiter’s brain.

So, how to cook! Sorry, write a perfect resume?

The sole objective of a resume is to gain entry to the heart and minds of the recruiter. In the earlier days of job applications, the resume contains a list of barely essential facts. The interview was the most common mode of understanding your particular profile.

Today resume shoulders the dual burden of communicating your profile in a condensed form and a pitching document.

A perfect resume is a myth, a holy grail which is theorized, not achieved. You aim to make a perfect resume, but end up creating an ideal resume which would help you gain a job. There ends the objective of the document.

The process of writing a resume varies from one person to another, but the components of a perfect resume remain the same. Here is a look at a list of 12 factors that if combined in correct proportions would give birth to a job winning resume.

12 ingredients of a perfect resume

1. Heading

The heading is the area strikes the first hammer. The heading is the space which is occupied by your name and communication details. When I say communication, I mean your contact address, mobile number, and email.

Important Note: Increase the font size of your name to make it stand out from the rest of the pack.

Don’t: Never write the title of your resume as “Resume”, “CV”, “Curriculum Vitae” or “Bio-Data”.

2. Career Objective/Personal Statement

The necessity of a career objective can be determined only by its writer. The contents of a professional’s resume with solid years of experience obviate the need of a career objective.

In case you feel that a career objective is required, make sure you write it on your own. Aim for a short paragraph comprising three to four sentences. They paragraph should directly answer who you are, and what you aim.

Don’t: Never copy the standard, jargonist career objective text from sample resume you find on the internet. They would do more harm than good.

3. Professional Summary

A professional summary should be able to capture the key features of your professional self in few bulleted points. A professional summary is a preamble to your resume. What you write here, is going to linger in the minds of the viewer.

As the name suggests, it is imperative to summarise your skills and not elaborate them.

Important
* Never blow your trumpet in general and particularly in your professional summary
* Never write more than 8 – 10 bullet points
* Professional summary is best presented in bulleted points and not in paragraph form (although if you love writing or reading paragraphs, I won’t discourage you).

4. Key Skills

A sane mind would question the presence of Key Skills section, when there is professional summary already present. List of key skills on a resume serves two purposes.
* Helps a deadline driven recruitment executive to identify your key skills without perusing the professional summary section
* Key Skills section is also a place where you can include some critical keywords that a potential recruiter may use to search resume database

Important
* Present key skills in tabular form
* Never include more than 10 – 12 key skills
* Exclude generic skills such as communication, team player, etc.

5. Academic Qualification

The placement and the content of Academic section depend on your experience. For example, a fresher resume would have educational qualification as a top priority, while a veteran’s profile would push the academic section to the bottom of the list.

Key things to include in your academic qualification section
* Name of the degree
* Institution
* Year of passing (If you are studying write “pursuing” or “expected to complete in YYYY”)
* Exclude schooling details if you have removed the fresher’s tag (if you have more than 2 – 3 years of experience)

6. Internships

Internship experience and details would help an entry level professional. It communicates to the recruiter, that an entry level professional is not a fresher, and has some experience serving in an organisation. I would personally recommend not to include them if you are an experienced professional.

7. Work Experience

The trickiest part of any resume is your work experience. If you list down your roles and responsibilities from entering the office until leaving your cabin, you are in for a surprise! Your resume won’t trouble the recruiters.

A potential recruiter would love to see your achievements and not the boring list of your roles. The benefits of hiring you would be gauged on the achievements you have made in your previous organisation.

That being said, do not completely ignore your roles and responsibilities. Only include them if they are unique and makes sense to the job you are applying.

8. Training

The training section on your resume communicates a very powerful message to the reader. It makes them feel that you are a complete package, which requires less grooming and hence less cost. Training is training even if you have not received a certificate. Hence list all of them on your resume.

9. Software Skills

We live in the digital age. Every graduate is expected to be a computer literate with basic knowledge in handling applications such as word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and emails. Some jobs require specialised software knowledge such as CRM, SAP, etc.

Listing your software skills on your resume is necessary if they are relevant or closely pertinent to the profile you are targeting.

If you are applying for an SEO opportunity, your knowledge of HTML & CSS will come in handy. On the other hand, the same would be unnecessary if you are applying for an Industrial Sales position.

10. Personal Information

I have seen resumes with Personal Information section filled with details such as Name of Spouse, Marital Status, Children, Father’s Name, Nationality, and some containing even the Religion.

I am sorry folks, and your recruiter would not be bothered about your ethnicity unless you are going to mention it.

Write only the needful information which includes
* Date of Birth
* Languages Known
* Passport Details
* References

11. Hobbies

Hobbies or personal interests continues to be a contradicted subject. I recommend writing the hobbies only if they are relevant to your current profile and makes sense for the recruiter.

Let us check this example. If you are applying for a Front End Designer position in a Digital Marketing Agency, it makes sense if your hobby is a photo manipulation.

For your understanding

12. Grammar & Spell Check

Do you rely on the spell check of your word processor (Microsoft Word)? If yes, then you are in trouble. MS Word sometimes overlooks minute grammatical errors which may have a serious dent on your reputation. Use specific grammar check software such as Grammarly and make sure that your resume is free from spelling and contextual errors.
